IPL Hair Removal
Pre-Treatment:
Test Patch & Consultation:
For IPL treatments, a test patch and consultation are required prior to your full treatment. If you're booking for hair removal, please do not shave the treatment area and arrive with the hair intact so we can assess the area before starting. This ensures the best results and safety for your procedure.
- Avoid Hair Removal Methods: Do not wax, pluck, use depilatory creams, or undertake electrolysis for 4 weeks prior to treatment and in between treatments.
- Skip Prescription Exfoliants: Do not use prescription strength exfoliant creams (like Retin-A and alpha hydroxy) for 2 weeks prior to treatment.
- Avoid Shaving: Do not shave for up to 2 weeks prior to your first treatment. Please shave the NIGHT before all subsequent treatments 12-24 hours prior to your treatment.
Please do not shave for your initial patch test/consultation for us to see the hair prior to commencing treatment.
- Avoid Tanning: Refrain from tanning, including self-tanning lotions, tanning beds/booths, or sun exposure, for 4 weeks prior to and in between treatments until you finish your course of treatments. Use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater on any sun-exposed skin that you plan to treat. This includes Melanin producing injections/sprays & Solarium.
- Cold Sore Prevention: If you are prone to cold sores and are undergoing IPL Hair Removal for your top lip, please take antivirals prior to your treatment.
- Increased Photosensitivity and Medications
Certain medications can increase photosensitivity to UV, laser, and IPL treatments. If you have started or changed the dosage of any of the following medications during your treatment program, please inform your clinician:
- Antibiotics: Doxycycline (acne), minocycline, tetracyclines, sulphonamides
- Antihistamines: Diphenhydramine, cyproheptadine
- Antidepressants
- Herbal Preparations: St. John’s Wort, Ginkgo Biloba, citrus oils, herbal HRT therapies
Taking these medications does not exclude you from IPL treatments, but extra precautions will be necessary.
Post-Treatment:
- Sunburn-Like Sensation: A mild sunburn-like sensation is expected, usually resolving within 2-3 hours but potentially lasting up to 2 days. Apply chilled aloe vera gel or an ice pack every hour for 5 to 10 minutes to soothe the skin until symptoms subside if need be.
- Avoid Sun Exposure: Protect treated areas from the sun. Apply sunblock with SPF 30 or greater daily to sun-exposed treated areas between treatments and for 4-6 weeks after the last treatment.
- Gentle Cleansing: Bathe or shower as usual, but avoid strongly scented lotions, soaps, prescription strength exfoliant creams, loofah sponges, and aggressive scrubbing on treated areas during the healing phase.
- Healing: Allow any blistered or open areas to heal naturally. If healing is delayed, a thin coating of antibiotic ointment may be advised. Do not pick at these areas to avoid infection or scarring. Crusting will resolve in 3 to 14 days; antibiotic ointment is not recommended for crusting.
- Stubble Appearance: You may notice "stubble" in 1 to 4 weeks. This is not new hair growth but remnants of treated hairs being expelled from the IPL-damaged follicle. Let the hair fall out on its own or gently wash with a warm wet washcloth. Avoid plucking or tweezing; shaving is allowed during this period.
- Follow-Up Treatments: For best results, follow up with treatments as soon as hair starts to grow. Your clinician will advise you on when to schedule your next appointment. Adhering to this schedule is crucial for optimal results.
